Yoo Yong Sang

작품을 보고 있으면 와인이 바로 앞에 있는 것 같은 착각을 불러일으킬 정도로 생생하게 와인을 묘사한 유용상은 최근 독일 전시에서 현지 언론이 세계적으로 유일하게 와인과 예술을 접목시켜 그리는 작가라는 호평과 함께 성공적으로 전시를 마치며 글로벌 작가로서의 가능성을 확인함과 동시에 와인과 더불어 사랑 받는 작가가 됐다.

이번 전시에서는 특히 최근 그가 심혈을 기울여 작업한 신작 중심으로 진행이 되며 와인을 가까이에서 바라본 듯한 시선으로 묘사한 대작들 위주로 선보인다. 건드리면 만져질 것 같고 힘주면 깨질 것 만 같은 극사실적인 묘사 때문에 유용상을 극사실주의 작가라고 한다.

하지만 단지 사실 그대로의 재현을 하는 작가와는 달리 유용상의 시선이 반영이 된 작품을 통해 기법에 놀라기보다는 복잡 다양한 현대사회 속에서 비움의 메시지와 감정을 전달하는 철학적인 작품의 깊이에 더 마음이 동감하게 된다.

유용상이 이번 전시에 테마로 정한 ‘CONTEMPORARY MAN’에서 알 수 있듯이 바쁜 경쟁 구도 속에서 같은 일상을 보내는 현대인들이 전쟁 직후의 혼란스러웠던 사회만큼 각자의 내면도 화려한 이상과 참혹한 현실 사이에서 소용돌이치는 모습을 보여준다.
