북대황은 중국 동북부 흑룡강성의 베이다황(北大荒) 일대를 부르는 말로 ‘거대한 황무지 지역’을 의미한다. 1950년대에 이 곳은 10만명의 중국군에 의해 개척되기 시작했는데 당시 개척에 참여한 군인 중에서 예술적 감수성이 풍부한 사람들에 의해 북대황 판화가 탄생하게 된다.

작가들은 대자연과 싸우며 옥토를 건설하는 힘찬 모습을 강렬하게 표현했고, 넓은 구도를 이용해 북대황의 자연환경 및 신사회 건설의 장대한 기상을 표현했다.
북대황 판화의 탄생과 발전 원인을 요약하자면 적어도 세가지 중요한 요소가 있음을 알 수 있는데, 그 첫째는 그들 자신의 황무지에서의 치열한 생존을 위한 몸부림이었다는 것이고, 둘째는 작가로서의 집요한 창작 열망추구가 그것이고, 세째는 당시 그 지역의 독특한 문화 환경에 있다.
이는 반제 반봉건 투쟁으로 중앙에서 오지인 이곳에 축출된 기존 우익 문화인들 다수가 신 중국 건설의 현장인 이곳 북대황으로 내쫒겨 졌고, 공교롭게도 이러한 환경이 새로운 문화환경이 배태되는데 큰 역할을 하게 된 것이다.
그 중에는 저명한 작가 丁玲, 중국화가 尹瘦石, 유화가 張欽若, 徐介城, 만화가 丁聰, 판화가 張路 등 사람들이 바로 그들이다. 이들의 탄탄한 문예역량이 이들 군인 예술가들에게 전수되어 신개간지의 문예를 발전시키게 되는데 중요한 역할을 하게 된다.
흑룡강성의 북대황판화는 광활한 대지를 중심으로 자연과 인간의 교감을 이루면서 서정성과 묘법의 밀도 있는 접근으로 유인다색판화를 정착시켰다는 평가를 받고 있다.
